the order story

When I became an empty nester, I realized my nest was not so empty. In fact, it was chock full of memorabilia, favorite things, and every piece of artwork my children had ever made. When we had downsized from the suburbs to a cozy condo in the city, I was sure that our new space would be simpler, more manageable – and it was at first. However, a full, new, exciting urban life got in the way of consistent and productive organization. As commitments and distractions built up, so did the clutter. I could no longer deny it was time to re-group and bring order back into our home. It was then that I realized I had been, in a variety of different roles over my lifetime, consistently creating orderly and functional spaces. This seemed the right time to permanently bring those skills home. I knew right away I was not alone in my yearning for order. Friends and colleagues often talked about overdue “closet binges” or dreaded “spring cleaning,” with dreams of having a simplified, decluttered home and office. The help I offered my inner circle became my obsession. Aren’t we all, at some point in our lives, searching to find order within the chaos?
